Private John Wood, 10th/11th (Service) Battalion, Highland Light Infantry. He was killed in action in Belgium during the German Spring Offensive on the River Lys on the 9th April 1918, aged 23. He had been born in Coldingham and was the son of Thomas and Jane Wood of Warlawbank, Reston and is Commemorated on the Ploegsteert, Memorial, Belgium. The photographs show Allied troops preparing, in rather makeshift defences, to resist the advancing Germans.
