Sergeant Daniel Stuart, M.M., 2nd Battalion, Royal Scots. ( Both the Commonwealth War Graves Commission site and ” Soldiers Died ” spell his name Stewart ) He was killed in action in France, aged 28, on 3rd May 1917 during the Battle of Arras and is buried in Drury Crucifix Cemetery, Pas de Calais, France. He had been born at Greenlaw and was the son of John and Catherine Stewart of Todrig, Hume, Berwickshire. He had enlisted in November 1914 but was not posted to his Battalion until after 1915.He fell in a wide scale offensive in the Monchy sector on 3rd May where the Battalion suffered heavy casualties and due to uncut wire they failed to penetrate the German first line of trenches. His award of the Military Medal was announced after his death. The photos show troops at Arras.
