Flight Lieutenant Archibald Douglas

Flight Lieutenant Archibald Gordon Douglas, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve. He was lost on an Air Operation to Munich with 10 Squadron Royal Air Force on 6th September 1943 aged 26. He had been born in Darlington and was the son of George and Elizabeth Sutherland Douglas of Colville House, Gordon and husband of Alexandra Douglas of  Sunnyside, Gordon. Before joining the R.A.F. in September 1939 he had worked in the Royal Bank in Greenlaw. He was the pilot of a Handley Page Halifax 11 heavy bomber ( JD166 ) which had taken off from R.A.F  Melbourne in Yorkshire for a raid on Munich.  It was shot down by a German night fighter near Leeder south west of Munich. Flt/Lt Douglas and his rear gunner Sgt O’ Kill were killed whilst the other 5 crew members bailed out and were made Prisoners of War. He is buried in Durnbach War Cemetery, Germany.
