Lance Corporal George Adamson

Lance Corporal George Adamson, 11th ( Service ) Battalion, Royal Scots. He was killed in Belgium, aged 28, on the 20th September 1917 during the Third Battle of Ypres. He had been born in Melrose and was the son of John and Margaret Adamson of 26 Sime Place, Galashiels. He had landed in France with his Battalion in May 1915 and is commemorated on the Tyne Cot memorial, Zonnebeke, Flanders, Belgium. He fell in an attack on the Zonnebeke Redoubt in support of the 6th Battalion K.O.S.B. Casualties were 100 Other Ranks in killed and wounded. The photos show the appalling conditions under which the Battle was fought. Heavy rain had flooded the battlefield already churned up by artillery which had destroyed the fragile Flanders drainage systems. ( His brother Thomas also fell – see above )>
