Private Thomas Veir

Private Thomas Arklie Veir, Army Service Corps, attached to the Labour Corps. He died on Service, aged 44, in the Edinburgh War Hospital, Bangour on the 10th June 1918 and is buried in Chirnside Kirkyard. He had been born in Leith and was the son of Thomas and the late Jane Veir of Edinburgh and the husband of Mary Veir of Image Row, Chirnside. He had been employed as a paper maker in Hong Kong and arrived back at the Chirnside paper mill in October 1914. He had enlisted in the A.S.C. but was posted to the Essex Regiment then transferred to the Labour Corps. Whilst in France he became ill with malarial fever and was evacuated to Bangour where he died.
