Private James Jeffrey

Private James Jeffrey, 1st/7th Battalion Northumberland Fusiliers. He was killed in action on 26th April, 1915 aged 28 at the Battle of St. Julien. This was a British counter attack following a succesful German gas attack a few days earlier. The 1st/7th Battalion were part of the 149th Northumbrian Brigade. The Brigade lost nearly 2,000 men that day including their Commanding Officer Brigadier General James Riddell. Private Jeffrey  was the son of Peter and Janet Jeffrey of 92 Castlegate, Berwick-on-Tweed and he operated a dairy business before enlisting. He is commemorated on the Menin Gate Memorial, Ypres.
