Private Bruce Stewart

Private Bruce Stewart, 15th ( 1st Edinburgh) Battalion, Royal Scots. He died of wounds on 13th June 1917, aged 35, whilst a Prisoner of War in Germany. He had been born in Lilliesleaf to William and Mary Stewart of Darnick then Tweed View, Newstead and is buried in Niederzwehren Cemetery, Cassel, Germany. He had been an apprentice in Melrose and then an Ironmonger in Dumfries before enlisting in Dumfries in November 1914. . During the Battle of Arras he had been wounded by shrapnel and taken prisoner before dying in a German hospital in Hamelin. His Headstone is inscribed ” He Died A True Soldier And Son”.
