Private William Spiden

Private William A. Spiden, 8th ( Service ) Battalion, Seaforth Highlanders. He died from wounds in France on 13th May 1916, aged 29. He had been born in Hutton and was was the son of David and Ellen Spiden of Fishwick, Paxton. He is buried in Bethune Cemetery, France.  His Headstone is inscribed ” Greater Love Hath No Man “. 8th Seaforths were part of the 15th ( Scottish ) Division. Before enlisting on 23rd December 1914 he had been employed as a ploughman at Camphill and had always shown his pair of plough horses at the Berwick May Horse procession.
