Flight Lieutenant William Lough

Flight Lieutenant William Stewart Lough, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve.  He was killed in action, aged 27, on the 20th August 1944.  He had been born in Eyemouth and was the son of Margaret and the late Harry Lough of 27 Albert Road, Eyemouth and the husband of Janet Lough of Linlithgow. He was a member of 265 Squadron was part of R.A.F. Coastal Command and which flew the Consolidated Catalina on Anti-Submarine patrols into the Indian Ocean from Diego Suarez in Madagascar. He is commemorated on the Alamein Memorial, Egypt. Before enlisting he had been a member of the West Lothian Police before moving to the Paisley Force. His aircraft was shot down whilst attacking U-862 off the Great Comoro Island in the Mozambique Strait. His brother Harry also died during the War – see above.
