Second Lieutenant Eric Sandison

Second Lieutenant  Eric William Wright Sandison,  Mentioned in Dispatches ,3rd ( Reserve ) Battalion, Royal Scots att. 15th ( Service ) Battalion, Royal Scots. He died on Active Service in France on 18th November 1916 aged 24. He had been born in Newcastle and was the son of Mary Helen McGregor Sandison and the late Magnus Sandilands of Highlaws, Eyemouth and is buried in Wimereux Communal Cemetery, Pas de Calais, France.  He was employed as an engineer when he enlisted in the Scottish Horse Yeomanry going to Gallipoli as dismounted troops in September 1915. He then returned to the U.K. to take up a commission.  He was mentioned in dispatches for his part in a raid on 8th November. He and Captain Selby with 42 Other Ranks raided German trenches in the Bois Grenier sector . After a fierce bombing contest the raid was successful with many German casualties and a Trench Mortar destroyed. He had joined his Battalion in France in July 1916 but fell ill in November and died in hospital in Wimereux.  His Headstone is inscribed  ” Son Of The Late Magnus  Sandison Of Highlaws, Berwickshire “.
