Private William Mclelland

Private William McLelland, 1st/7th ( Territorial ) Battalion, Durham Light Infantry. He was killed in action in France on the 9th September 1918 during the ” Advance to Victory”. He was the son of Ellen ( McLelland ) Norris and the stepson of David Norris of Main Street, Yetholm and is buried in St. Erme Communal Cemetery Extension, Aisne, France. The Battalion was part of the 151st ( Durham Light Infantry ) Brigade in the 50th ( Northumbrian) Division and after the War an impressive Memorial was raised in commemoration. It was erected near the village of Weiltje in the Ypres Salient where on the 26th April 1915 the Division had fought its first action of the War only days after landing on the Continent.
