Private John Guthrie

Private John Guthrie, 8th ( Service ) Battalion, Leicestershire Regiment. He was killed in action in France on 22nd March 1918 near St Quentin on the second day of the German Spring Offensive ( Operation Michael ) and is commemorated on the Pozieres Memorial, Pozieres, France. He had been born in Yetholm and was the son of the late Andrew and Helen Guthrie. Before enlisting in the 6th Dragoon Guards in May 1917 he had been employed in his Uncle Thomas Simpson’s butchers business in Yetholm. He transferred to the Leicesters in France in August 1917.  The photographs show Allied troops preparing to resist the advancing Germans.
