Private William Hunter, 7th Battalion, Australian Infantry Force. He was killed at Gallipolli on either the 8th or 9th August 1915, aged 24. He was the son of Thomas and Jane Ann Hunter of Bridgend, Wooler and was a native of Wooler. He was buried in Johnstons Jolly Cemetery, Gallipoli and it is likely that he fell in the fierce fighting that took place in capturing the “Lone Pine” position and holding it against the numerous Turkish counter attacks. He had emigrated to Australia sometime before the War. The photograph shows Australian troops in a trench before the attack.
