Private Nicholas Thompson

Private Nicholas Thompson, 12th ( Service ) Battalion, Northumberland Fusiliers. He died in France on 4th July 1916 from wounds received in action during the Battle of the Somme, aged 30. He was the only son of Mrs Frances Thompson of West Street, Wooler and is buried in Mericourt-L’ Abbe Communal Cemetery Extension, Somme, France. Before enlisting he had been employed as a groom at the Black Bull hotel in High Street, Wooler. The photos show troops on the Somme and the colour image shows a peaceful Somme landscape today.
