Marine John William Smith, Royal Marines. He was killed on 17th August 1944, aged 22, during the Normandy Campaign when his landing craft was torpedoed. He was the son of John and Mabel Smith of Wooler and is buried in Hermonville War Cemetery, Calvados, Normandy where his Headstone is inscribed ” The Lord Is My Shepherd; I Shall Not Want” Ever Remembered “. There was a sad postscript. His father and mother had paid a visit to their sons grave and were in company with a Mr and Mrs Butler of Hendon who were also visiting their son’s grave .On the way back to Dieppe to catch the steamer home Mr Butler collapsed into the arms of Mr Smith and died instantly.
