Signalman John Brewis

Signalman John William Alexander Brewis, Royal Corps of Signals. He died on Service on 22nd November 1945, aged 22. He was the son of Victor and Marion Brewis of Wooler and was cremated at Warriston Crematorium, Edinburgh. He was the brother of Victor Brewis above. He had been aboard a Liberator of R.A.F. Transport Command and was returning to India after leave. The aircraft took off from R.A.F. Merryfield near Ilminster, Somerset  but failed to clear a nearby hillside and crashed killing all 27 personnel on board.( 5 crew and 22 passengers ).Most of the casualties belonged to the Royal Corps of Signals. There is a Military Memorial to this terrible accident at Buckland St. Mary, Somerset.
