Corporal John Wood, 4th Battalion, Seaforth Highlanders He died from wounds in France on 9th June 1940, aged 22. He had been born at Fishwick Mains, Hutton and was the son of Peter and Euphemia Wood of Cockburnspath and Lintlaw and is buried with 7 of his comrades in Arques-La-Bataille Communal, Cemetery, near Dieppe, France. Before enlisting he had been employed as a bakery vanman in the Whitsome and Coldingham areas. His Battalion was part of the 51st ( Highland ) Division which was cut off and forced to surrender at St. Valery-en-Caux. Corporal Wood is also commemorated on the Coldingham Memorial.
