Corporal John Wilson

Corporal John Wilson, 1st/14th Battalion, London Regiment ( London Scottish ) He died of wounds on 13th June 1915, aged 25. He had been born in Swinton and was the son of William and Annie Wilson of Laws Cottage, Whitsome.  He is buried in Cambrin Churchyard Extension, Cambrin, France where his headstone is inscribed ” Of Laws Cottage, Duns Beloved Son And Brother”. He had been educated at the Berwickshire High School, Duns before going to work in the Duns branch of the Royal Bank of Scotland. He was promoted to the London branch and later worked for a firm of Electrical Engineers. Whilst in London he joined the Territorial London Scottish and went with them to France in September 1914 where they fought at Messines in October. He was fatally wounded when a grenade exploded prematurely. The photos show the London Scottish in France.
