Private Thomas Brunton

Private Thomas Brunton, 14th ( Service ) Battalion ,Highland Light Infantry. He was killed in action near Bourlon Wood on 28th November 1917 during the Battle of Cambrai.  He had been born in Coldstream and was the son of Isabella Brunton of Hardiesmill Place, Gordon and  is commemorated on the Cambrai Memorial Cambrai, France. Before enlisting he had been employed as a ploughman.  He had originally enlisted in the  4th K.O.S.B. but had been transferred to the H.L.I. in France. This battle saw the first use of the massed tank attack ( 437 ) on good ground to breach German lines and initially was very successful. The first photograph shows some of the tanks ready to commence the attack and the second shows one of the tanks in close up.
