Lance Corporal Robert White

Lance Corporal Robert White, 8th ( Service ) Battalion, Somerset Light Infantry and formerly of the Northumberland Fusliers. He was kiled in action on 1st July 1916, the first day of the Battle of the Somme and is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial. He fell in the attack towards Fricourt where despite heavy losses crossing No Man’s land “Lozenge  Alley” trench was taken and consolidated and a German counter attack was repulsed. The photo shows a recently captured trench on the Somme with the chalky soil of the Region very evident.
