Lieutenant John Alexander Tower Robertson. Indian Army Reserve of Officers, attd. 2nd Battalion, 3rd Queen Alexandra’s Own Gurkha Rifles. He was lost at sea on 30th December 1915, aged 29,, when the S.S. “Persia” was torpedoed and sunk by U-38 off Crete in the Mediterranean Sea. He was the only son of Alexander Tower Robertson J.P.,D.L.,V.D. and the late Ada Robeertson of Berwick-upon-Tweed and is commemorated on the Chatby Memorial, Alexandria, Egypt. The ” Persia ” was a passenger liner of 7,974 tons built in 1900 by Caird and Co. Greenock and owned by P. and O. She was sunk without warning and lost 343 of the 519 passengers and crew. Lieutenant Owen Gough from Coldstream was also lost.
