Private Thomas Hume

Private Thomas Hume, 10th ( Service ) Battalion, Northumberland Fusiliers. He was killed in action in Belgium on 17th September 1917 during the Battle of Third Ypres and is commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial, Zonnebeke, Flanders, Belgium. He had been born in Alnwick, lived at Twizel and was employed as a salmon fisherman on the River Tweed. The photographs show the type of atrocious the troops were expected to fight in. The incessant shelling had destroyed the Flanders drainage systems and the heavy rains had turned the ground into a quagmire making any kind of movement very difficult.
