Private William Mitchell Ovens, 818th Motor Transport Coy., Royal Army Service Corps. He died from pneumonia in Persia on 26th November 1919, aged 33. He had been born in Kirkhope, Selkirkshire and was the son of John and Margaret Ovens of Netherhowden, Oxton. He was the husband of Elspeth Ovens of Townhead, Stow and is buried in Tehran War Cemetery, Iran. His Headstone is inscribed ” Thy Will Be Done”. Before enlisting in 1915 he had been employed as a baker’s van man in Stow.
