Lance Corporal George Jopling Smith, 1st Battalion, Seaforth Highlanders. He was killed in action on 22nd February 1917 in Mesapotamia, aged 23 and is commemorated on the Basra Memorial in Iraq. He was the son of George Smith of Laurel Bank, Stow. Before enlisting in early 1915 he had been employed as a surfaceman with the North British Railway Co. in Galashiels. He fell in the action near Sannaiyat where the Battalion supported the Black Watch in repelling a strong Turkish counter attack designed to halt the British march on Baghdad.
