Gunner Andrew John Hogarth, 20th Reserve Battery, Royal Field Artillery. He died at Home on 4th April 1917, aged 31. He was the husband of Mary Fleming Hogarth of Friars Cottages, Kelso and is buried in Smailholm Kirkyard, Smailholm, Kelso. The main weapon of the R.F.A was the 18 pounder field gun which used both high explosive and shrapnel shells normally in an anti infantry role. A shrapnel shell is shown below.
