Sergeant William Johnstone

Sergeant William Johnstone, 102nd ( Central Ontario ) Battalion, Canadian Infantry. He was killed in action in France, aged 42, on the 9th June 1917 and is commemorated on the Vimy Memorial, Vimy, France. Hew had been born in Selkirk in 1875 and was the son of the late Robert and Eliza Johnstone formerly of 10 Market Place, Selkirk. After he had emigrated to Canada he was working as a teamster when he enlisted in January 1916. He went to France with the Battalion in August 1916 and he was promoted Sergeant in April 1917.
