Private William Scott, 2nd Battalion, Royal Scots. He was killed in action in France, aged 31, on the 14th July 1916 during the battle of the Somme. He had been born in Selkirk in 1885 and was the son of Christina Scott of 4 Dunsdale Cottages, Selkirk. He had landed in France in May 1915 with the 12th Battalion and at some point had been transferred to the 2nd Battalion. He is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, Thiepval, Somme, France. He fell in the successful assault on the Bazentin Ridge where the Battalion achieved all its objectives. This success cost the Battalion 77 casualties. The photos show Scottish troops on the Somme.
