Corporal William Henderson

Corporal William Young Henderson, 2nd Battalion, Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders. He died in France, aged 26, on the 20th June 1915 from wounds suffered in action. He had been born in Selkirk in 1889 and was the son of John and Rachel Henderson of “Glendearg Cottage”, 25 Curror Street, Selkirk. He died in the 10th General Hospital in Rouen and is buried in St. Sever Cemetery, Rouen, France where his Headstone is inscribed ” There Is A Link Death Cannot Sever Love And Remembrance Last Forever”. He had been employed in a woollen mill in Selkirk when he enlisted in August 1914 and went to France as a Corporal in April 1915. His brother Archibald also fell, see below ). The photograph shows the Argylls in trenches in 1915 with primitive gas masks.
