Private William Hamilton

Private William Gillespie Hamilton, 1st Battalion, Royal Scots Fusiliers. He died on Active Service in France of pneumonia, aged 17, on the 22nd March 1917. He had been born in Glasgow in 1899 and was the son of the late Agnes Hamilton and James Hamilton of Philliphaugh Farm, Selkirk and he is buried in Etaples Military Cemetery, Pas de Calais, France. He had originally enlisted ( underage) in the 1st/9th ( Highland ) Battalion Royal Scots in May 1915 but was posted to the 1st Battalion, R.S.F. in France in September 1916. He was admitted to the British Red Cross Hospital in Le Treport in January 1917 suffering from blood poisoning but died from pneumonia two months later.
