Private William Emond

Private William Emond, 1st Garrison Battalion, Highland Light Infantry. He died on Service at Home on the 17th May 1918 aged 51. He was the son of the late William and Margaret Emond formerly of Kirk Wynd, Selkirk and the husband of Agnes Emond of 1 Tower Terrace, Selkirk whom he had married in Selkirk in 1889. He had been a previous volunteer and a member of the Pipe Band. He enlisted in the K.O.S.B. in October 1914 and later served with the 1st/4th Battalion before transferring to the H.L.I. His Battalion had been formed at Fort George in 1916 and had moved to Maryhill Barracks in Glasgow in January 1918. He had been on his way home on leave from Maryhill when he was taken ill and died in his home in Selkirk. He is buried in Selkirk Cemetery where his Headstone is inscribed ” Asleep In Jesus”.
