Private Robert Hogg

Private Robert Hogg 1st/5th ( Dumfries and Galloway ) Battalion, Kings Own Scottish Borderers. He was killed in action in Palestine , aged 33, on the 19th April 1917. He had been born in Selkirk in 1885 and was the son of Robert and Janet Hogg of Muthag Street, Selkirk and the husband of Maggie Hogg of Bridge Street, Selkirk. He is buried in Gaza War Cemetery, Palestine ( Israel ). He had originally enlisted in the 4th K.O.S.B. and went to Gallipoli with them in June 1915. At some point he was transferred to the 5th K.O.S.B. and fell during the Second Battle of Gaza when his Battalion attacked the Turkish positions on ” Outpost Hill”. The cost was heavy with 21 Officers and 322 Other Ranks killed or wounded.
