Private Joseph Sneddon Young Park, 1st Battalion, Kings Own Scottish Borderers. He was killed in action, aged 24, at Gallipoli on the 4th June 1915 during the Third Battle of Krithia. He had been born in Selkirk in 1891 and was the son of Peter and Isabella Park of Cannon Street, Selkirk. He was the husband of Elizabeth Park of 44 Ettrick Terrace, Selkirk and is commemorated on the Helles Memorial, Helles, Gallipoli, Turkey. He had joined the Reserves in August 1914 and was posted to his Battalion and landed with them on Gallipoli in April 25th 1915. The Battle was a general assault designed to cut the Peninsula in half but failed in the face of fierce Turkish resistance. The K.O.S.B made some small gains but with the usual heavy casualties especially among the Officers. The photo shows the Borderers “going over the top” during the assault.
