Private John Young

Private John Hume Young, 51st Battalion, Australian Infantry. He was killed in France , aged 42, on the 28th January 1917. He had been born in 1874 in Galashiels and was the son of John and Mary Young of Philiphaugh Nursery, Selkirk and the husband of Harriet Young of Marylands, Western Australia whom he had married in Selkirk in 1910. He had served for five years in the Territorial K.O.S.B. before emigrating to Australia where he was employed as a painter. He enlisted in Perth in June 1916 and joined his Battalion in France the 22nd January and was killed six days later. He is buried in Guards Cemetery, Lesboeufs, France where his Headstone is inscribed ” A Loving Husband And Father Who Gave His Life For His Country”.
