Private Frederick Reekie

Private Frederick William Reekie, 5th ( Territorial ) Battalion, Kings Own Scottish Borderers. He died in France on the 18th June 1940 aged 22. He was the son of Beatrice and the late Andrew Reekie of 4 Raeburn Place, Selkirk and is commemorated on the Dunkirk Memorial, Dunkirk, France. His Battalion was part of the 52nd ( Lowland ) Division which had been sent to France on the 13th June 1940 to try and bolster the retreating French armies after the Dunkirk evacuations were over. It was soon realised this was a hopeless quest and withdrawal to Cherbourg was organised with the 5th K.O.S.B acting as rearguard. On the 18th June some men from “A” Company were cut off and were caught by a German mechanised force with casualties suffered before the rest made their escape. It may have been that Private Reekie was killed here.
