Private John Smith

Private John Hogg Smith, 7th (Wellington ) Regiment, New Zealand Expeditionary Force. He died at sea, aged 32, on the 6th May 1915 from wounds suffered at Gallipoli and is commemorated on the Lone Pine Memorial, Gallipoli, Turkey. He had been born in Berwick in 1883 and had emigrated to New Zealand at some stage. At his attestation in August 1914 his next of kin address was given as Todshawhaugh, Hawick and his occupation as ” bushman”. His legatee was named as his mother Mrs Hogg. He had landed at Gallipoli with the A.N.Z.A.C. Corps on the 25th April but was soon wounded with a gunshot to his thigh. He was on the Hospital Ship H.M.H.S. ” Goorkha” when he died, possibly, from blood poisoning and was buried at sea. The photo shows the “Goorkha” entering Malta Harbour in 1916 after having struck a mine.
