Sergeant Robert Aitchison, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve. He was lost on an Air Operation, aged 23, on the 17th September 1944. He had been born in Hutton, Berwickshire and was the son of John and Jane Aitchison of Ferneycastle, Reston and he is commemorated on the Runnymede Memorial. He had enlisted in August 1943 and completed his training a year later. He was Flight Engineer with 102 ( Ceylon ) Squadron based at R.A.F. Pocklington, Yorkshire. His aircraft was on a training flight tasked with disposing of bombs in the North Sea but failed to return. The Squadron operated the Handley Page Halifax with 4 Group Bomber Command. ( An unconfirmed report stated that this aircraft crashed near Gennep, Holland. If correct the aircraft was way off course ).
