Pilot Officer William Woolley

Pilot  Officer William Armstrong Woolley,  Royal Air Force. He died on Service in India on 24th March 1943, aged 24. He had been born in Newcastle and was the son of Mark and Margaret Woolley of Thorn Cottage, Paxton  and Tweedmouth and is buried in Karachi War Cemetery, Pakistan. This was a non operational cemetery. He had been educated at the Berwickshire High School and the had studied at the Benmore Forestry School. Originally he had enlisted in the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders before transferring into the Royal Engineers. He had gone to France and had been evacuated from Dunkirk in 1940. In July 1941 he had transferred into the Royal Air Force and was accepted for air crew training .He is also commemorated on the Memorial Tablet placed in the new High School, Duns. His Headstone is inscribed ” He Liveth Still In The Hearts Of Those Who Loved Him “. He had been flying a Hawker Hurricane of 151 Operational Training Unit at R.A.F. Risalpur when it crashed near Tangi.
