Private Robert Anderson

Private Robert Anderson,  4th ( Central Ontario) Battalion, Canadian Infantry. He was killed in action in France, aged 36, on the 8th October 1916 during the Battle of the Somme and is commemorated on the Vimy Memorial, Vimy, France.He was born in Beith, Ayrshire in 1881 and was the son of Robert and Mary Anderson of Green Street Lane Ayr. He had served his apprenticeship as a tailor with Aikman and Co., Lauder before emigrating to Canada in 1914. He was managing a farm near Clinton, Ontario when he visited Oxton in January 1911. He enlisted in the 71st Battalion in September 1915 and joined the 4th Battalion in France in May 1916. The photographs show troops on the Somme and the colour image shows a peaceful Somme landscape today.
