Lance Corporal Robert Affleck

Lance Corporal Robert Affleck, 1st Battalion, Tank Corps. He was killed in action in France, aged, 25, on the 8th August 1918 during the Battle of Amiens. He had been born in 1893 in Kirkhope, Selkirkshire and was the son of James Affleck and Maggie Young. In 1901 he was listed as living with the Young family at New Channelkirk Farm, Oxton. He was employed as a ploughman when he enlisted in May 1915 in the Motor Machine Gun Section of the Royal Field Artillery. He is buried in Bouchoir New British Cemetery, France. On the 8th August the Allies launched a great Offensive against the German lines which included a massed tank attack. A great victory was achieved with many prisoners taken and the German General Ludendorff called it ” the Black Day of the German Army”.
