Rifleman William Morton

Rifleman William James Morton, Northumberland Fusiliers. ( C.W.G.C. says otherwise !)  1/8th Battalion, West Yorkshire Regiment ( Prince of Wales Own )  He died on 20th October 1917 of wounds received during the Third Battle of Ypres aged 21. He was the son of Jessie Mavin of  Lilburn Grange, West Lilburn, Alnwick and is buried in St Sever Cemetery Extension Rouen, France. ( It is possible that he was transferred from the Fusiliers into the West Yorks. although the rank of Rifleman is strange). The photographs show the state of the battlefield by October where the incessant shelling had destroyed the Flanders drainage systems.
