Gunner William Hume

Gunner William Hume, Depot ( Lydd ) Royal Garrison Artillery.  He died from double pneumonia in the Victoria Infirmary, Glasgow on the 9th February 1919, aged 31, whilst on his demobilisation furlough. He had been born in Newton St Boswells and was the son of James and Margaret Hume and the husband of Mary Hume of Plantation, Glasgow. Before enlisting he had worked in Glasgow as a tramcar driver. The R.G.A. typically used 9.2 inch howitzers to destroy enemy emplacements with plunging shellfire as can be seen in the photograph.
