Lance Corporal Andrew Gilholm, “K” Supply Company, Army Service Corps. He died at sea, age 26, on 15th April 1917. He is commemorated on the Chatby Memorial, Alexandria, Egypt which bears the names of around 1000 Commonwealth servicemen who died of wounds at sea or were lost when their ship was sunk and have no grave other than the sea. He had been born in Melrose and was the son of George and Helen Gilholm of Eildon, Newtown St. Boswells. ( His brother John also fell – see above ). He was lost when the troopship ” Cameronia” was sunk by U-33 East of Malta whilst on route to Alexandria with 2,600 troops aboard. There were around 140 casualties.
