Private John Redpath Gill

Private John Redpath Gill, 9th ( Service )Battalion Worcestershire Regiment. He died in Mesopotamia, aged 26, on 6th April 1916 and is commemorated on the Basra Memorial. He had been born in Melrose and was the son of William and Janet Gill of Newstead (The Battalion diary shows the Battalion saw no fighting of importance since their arrival in Mesopotamia from the Gallipoli Peninsula so it may be that Private Gill died from disease).He had served his apprenticeship as a draper in Melrose before moving to London and enlisting in Finsbury. The Battalion went to Gallipoli in July 1915 then Egypt and Mesopotamia.
