Sergeand Pilot George Robert Dawson, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve. He was killed in a flying accident when his Hawker Hurricane crashed near Auchope Farm in the Cheviot Hills on 2nd June 1943 flying from Milfield Aerodrome aged 24. He was the son of William and Mary Dawson of Sao Paulo, Brazil and is buried in Kirknewton ( St. Gregory ) Churchyard, Kirknewton, Wooler, Northumberland. R.A.F. records give no cause for this crash. According to Peter Clark’s excellent book, ” Where the Hills meet the Sky ” Sgt. Dawson had only accumulated about nine hours on Hurricanes from Milfield before his death. His Headstone is inscribed “Of Sao Paulo, Brazil. Until The Day Break And The Shadows Flee Away”.
