Private Peter McCall, 1st Battalion, Kings Own Scottish Borderers. He was killed in action at Gallipoli on 4th June 1915, aged 34. He was a Regular Soldier and was the son of Alexander and Catherine McCall of Maxton and is commemorated on the Helles Memorial, Gallipoli, Turkey. He had been born in Edrom, Berwickshire, enlisted in Aspatria, Cumberland and lived in St Boswells. He fell in an attack on Turkish trenches during the Third Battle of Krithia which was intended to cut the Peninsula in two. It failed and gains were minimal with 4,500 casualties amongst the attacking Battalions. 1st K.O.S.B. was part of the 29th Division which was comprised of Regular Battalions. The first photograph shows H.M.S. “Vengeance” which together with H.M.S. “Swiftsure” bombarded the Turkish positions before the attack and the second shows the Battalion going over the top that morning.
