Private Alexander Wallace Welsh, 71st Field Ambulance, Royal Army Medical Corps. He was killed in Belgium on 6th July 1917, aged 20 and is buried in Railway Dugouts Burial Ground ( Transport Farm ), Zillebeke, Flanders, Belgium. He had been born in Mertoun and was the son of Robert and Christina Welsh of Clint Mains, Mertoun and Restalrig Square, Edinburgh. Before enlisting in November 1915 he had been employed as a grocer in Edinburgh. He originally served with the 3rd Lothian Field Ambulance before joining the 71st F.A. in Belgium in June 1917. ( His brother Henry also fell – see above ).
