Second Lieutenant George Wade

Second Lieutenant George Wade, 7th ( Service ) Battalion, Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders. He was lost at sea on 1st January 1917 aged 20. He was the son of Dr. G. Wade of Tasmania and Mrs E. Wade of Edinburgh and is commemorated on the Mikra Memorial, Kalamaria, Thessalonica, Greece. He had been educated at Galashiels Acadamy and George Watsons in Edinburgh before studying at Heriot Watt. He had been commissioned in the Argylls in December 1915 and was aboard the S.S.”Ivernia” en route to the Salonica Campaign when the sip was torpedoed and sunk by U-47 off Cape Matapan in the Mediterranean. The “Ivernia” had been chartered from the Admiralty for use as a troopship and was carrying 2,400 troops from Marseille to Alexandria. 36 crew and 74 troops were lost when she sank.
