Sapper James Shiel, Royal Engineers. He died at Home in Darnick, aged 38, on 14th May 1920 from Tuberculosis. He had been born in Melrose to Susan and the late William Shiel of Darnick, Melrose and is buried in Melrose Abbey Kirkyard. Before enlisting in March 1916 he had been employed as a stonemason. After going overseas he had become ill with T.B. and was evacuated home and discharged from the Army in December 1917.
