Private William J. Lowe, 15th Battery, Machine Gun Corps ( Motors). He died of wounds in France, aged 20, on 22nd December 1916. He was the son of James and Agnes Lowe of Ashville, Melrose and is buried in Pont-Du-Hem Military Cemetery, La Gorgue, France. He had been in a dug out with his brother Ion when it was struck by a shell. Ion survived but William was mortally wounded. He had been educated at Galashiels Academy the George Watsons in Edinburgh before going on to study electrical Engineering in Glasgow. He left his studies to enlist along with his brother in May 1915. Ion survived the War. His Unit used motorcycle mounted machine guns.
