Private John Gill

Private John Redpath Gill, 9th ( Service ) Battalion, Worcester Regiment. He died in Mesopotamia on 6th April 1916 from wounds received in action aged 26. He was the son of William and Janet Gill of Newstead, Melrose and is commemorated on the Basra Memorial, Basra, Iraq. He had been employed as an apprentice draper in Melrose before moving to London where he enlisted in the Worcesters. He went to Gallipoli then Egypt and finally Mesopotamia. He was mortally wounded in one of the attempts to relieve the garrison of Kut-Al-Amara which was besieged by strong Turkish forces.
